U9s at the Clifton Rangers Gala, September 1st 2013

The U9s started their 2013-14 season off by taking part in the Clifton Rangers gala.  The sun had decided it should disappear as it was September 1st and we had a cool, grey day at Brighouse High School.

We entered three squads into the gala, competing in two competitions against 19 other teams.  Both formats included two leagues of 5/6 teams, with the top two from each group going into the semi-finals for a knock-out tournament.

The Phantoms – produced a good display of football, beating Clifton Rangers A and Rothwell Juniors A both 1-0, drawing with our local rivals Dewsbury Rangers A 0-0, and losing close fought games to Westend A 1-2 and Northowram A 0-2.  The boys narrowly missed out on a semi-final berth on goal difference.

Despite a little bit of rustiness, the boys played some fantastic passing football at times and scored some brilliant goals – once again a fantastic, curling free kick from Charlie had to be one of the goals of the day.

Well done to the Phantoms squad Lucas H, Ben, Samuel, Jayden, Jamaine, Charlie, Jamie and Eddie.

Goal-scorers on the day were Eddie 2 and Charlie 1.

The Warriors – produced some lovely football in their group games, working the ball nicely from back to front at times.  They beat Brighouse B and Dewsbury Rangers B 2-1 and 4-1 respectively, before losing to the eventual gala winners (‘the Mighty Dragons’ A).  In the final group game a 2-2 draw was the end result against Westend B, although a deserved win was denied, as despite the ball clearly crossing the line, a goal wasn’t awarded by the referee!  Nevertheless, a draw was good enough to earn a semi-final place.  Unfortunately, for the second gala in a row, the Warriors lost out – this time to a good Rothwell Juniors B side.  Despite being disappointed not to progress through to the final, the Warriors could once again hold their heads high today and should be proud of a great start to the season!

Well done to James, George, Seth, Thomas, Cai, Alex, Dominic and Tyler!

Tyler picked-up where he left off from last season scoring 4, Alex and Dominic (making his Ossett Town debut 🙂 ) bagged 2-a-piece and Seth 1 – a fabulous long range free-kick.

The Harriers – produced a fantastic display of football today, full of passing, movement, hard-work and goals.

They beat Brighouse Juniors B (w/o), Clifton Rangers C (3-0), Dewsbury Rangers C (3-0) and earned a very good 2-2 draw with Rothwell Juniors B.  They qualified second in the group just behind Rothwell on goal difference.

The Harriers faced a tough semi-final encounter against the eventual winners the Mighty Dragons A.  The Harriers produced a fantastic display, losing narrowly 1-0 after a brilliant, battling performance against a team who had beaten everyone comfortably in qualifying from their group!

Well done to Lucas E, Matthew, Calum, Archie, Bailey, Rowan and Billy (making his Ossett Town debut 🙂 ).  You were all brilliant!

Harrier goal-scorers on the day were Billy 4, Archie 3 and Rowan 1.

Well done to all of the lads – the coaches, your parents and grand-parents are very proud of you all! 🙂

See you at training…..
