Under 7’s Match Reports – Sunday 9th March

A Team vs Shelf A

Ossett Town Juniors u7’s team: Ben Steel, Charlie Ambler, Luke Holmes, Rowan Stephenson, Lucas Stephens, Henry Hughes

A gorgeous day greeted the large crown that turned out to see the U7’s in action. It was a tight start to the game with both teams looking to take an early advantage. Shelf were looking good in possession and started to put pressure on the Ossett goal. They had a couple of good shots early in the game, one of which hit the post and the other brought out a very good save from Ben in the Ossett goal. This was starting to look like it would be a good test for the Ossett team, who have had a very good season. Ossett started to get a foothold in the game, with Rowan winning possession in the tackle and Luke carrying the ball well out of his own half.  The teamwork, which is the hallmark, of this Ossett team was starting to show and Lucas soon had a good shot which went narrowly wide. The pressure was growing from Ossett but Shelf continued to be a threat on the break. It was end to end stuff – Rowan won the ball and passed to Luke who was unlucky not to score. They soon won a free kick, which Henry took but his powerful shot rebounded off the wall. Ossett were increasing in confidence and Luke soon broke through the Shelf defence and slotted the ball home to give them a 1 0 lead. Soon after it was 2 0, when the ball broke to Henry after a good tackle from Charlie. Henry slotted the ball home with another fine finish. Shelf’s heads didn’t drop and Ben was soon called on to make another good save to keep the score at 2 0. However, their good play was soon rewarded with a deserved goal to bring the half time score to 2 1 to Ossett.

After a tight, even first half the crowd were expecting another half with few goals. However, Ryan’s half time team talk galvanised the Ossett team to start the second half on the front foot and they were rewarded with 3 goals in very quick succession. Henry scored goals 3 and 4 for Ossett, to complete his hat-trick. They were both really good finishes which gave the Shelf keeper no chance in goal. Ossett were now looking to kill the game off and were passing the ball about well. Lucas was going on a series of good runs. Charlie and Rowan were looking resolute at the back. After good pressure on the ball from Charlie, the ball went to Lucas who slipped the ball under the keeper to make it 5 1 to Ossett. Shelf were playing well though and were looking a constant threat. Very occasionally Ossett lost their defensive shape but Ben was having a sound game and made another good save. Shelf’s good play was soon rewarded with another goal to make it 5 2. It was then Ossett’s turn to attack and Luke won the ball, went on a mazy dribble and slotted the ball home to make it 6 2. This was proving to be more of an open game in the second half. Shelf then won a penalty, which Ben had no chance to save, which made the score 6 3 to Ossett. However, Ossett went down the other end and a great finish from Lucas made it 7 3, which soon became 7 4 when Shelf scored another goal. Luke was having another dynamic performance and he completed his hat trick with a great finish to make the score 8 4.  Town knew that Shelf would continue to attack but fine defensive play from Charlie, Rowan and Henry was keeping them at bay. However, shortly before the end Shelf scored their fifth of the game when the ball was deflected in from a Shelf corner. Final score 8 5 to Ossett.

Final Score Ossett Town U7’s A 8 5 Shelf Juniors U7’s (Ossett Scorers. Lucas 2, Luke 3, Henry 3)

This was a good game of football between 2 excellent teams. Well played to the Ossett side who continue to grow and develop as a team. It was a pleasure to watch you again. A special mention to Johnny Wroe who put in a fine refereeing performance but please get yourself to ‘Tanfastic’ before you get those legs out again.

B Team Vs Thornhill A

GK Harley Trott, Callum McGarry, Callum Fallas, Bailey Goodlad, Bailey Mitchell, Isaac Donlon.

It took coach Dave five minutes to figure out which Callum and which Bailey were playing in which positions!!!

When this was sorted Ossett started off on the front foot taking the game to Thornhill and Bailey G had a shot  from a through ball from Bailey M which went just wide, Bailey G was looking like a threat as he made another good run down the wing but Thornhill got back and stopped the attack. A move started from the back by  Callum M who passed to Callum F who found Bailey G and he skipped passed the defender and his shot saved but Bailey M was on hand to smash the ball home from a tight angle. 1 v 0.

Thornhill started to come forward mainly with the help of one player making all the runs but Callum M was not letting them and was making some great tackles to stop them, Bailey G reacted to one of the tackles first and made a quick counter attack which led to a good save to stop them making it two nil. Thornhill came forward again and Callum F trying his best to stop the attack tried to help the ball back to the keeper but it went the wrong side of Harley. 1 v 1.

Osset came straight back into there opponents half and Isaac played a lovely ball to Bailey M who played a great ball for Bailey G to run onto and his shot flew past the keeper. 2 v 1.

Thornhill managed to win a corner after some great tackling by Callum M and Isaac put the ball out . The ball was launched into the box and it was deflected in off Harley to make it 2 v 2.

Callum M was helping Ossett at the back really well but could,nt stop Thornhills best move of the match a great bit of skill out on the wing and rumn and the shot Harley tried to stop but the power took it over the line 2 v 3.

Ossett came out again and put alot of pressure on passing the ball around nicely, Callum F was playing the ball up and down the wing and Callum M even went forward and had a shot saved, Isaac made a run from the wing and his shot went into the side netting. Osset were caught on the wing and Thornhill ran straight through on a quick counter and scored to make it 2 v 4.

Ossett had a great move which all of the team were involved with and Callum M shot just wide. Thornhill had an attack which Harley easily saved and from the pass up the wing Thornhill once again ran through and scored to make it 2 v 5.

Ossett had the rest of the half but did,n t manage to get any shots in on goal.

Half-Time Ossett 2 v 5 Thornhill.

After a big talk from Dave the lads came out and went for it and after a few minutes of pressure a great run from Callum M who passed to Bailey M who quickly turned and his well placed shot made it 3 v 5.

Isaac and Bailey G were playing some great balls from the back and after Bailey G stopped a Thornhill attack he ran from halfway and placed a shot passed the keeper to make it 4 v 5.

Thornhill were just running with the ball and hitting it long and Callum M especially was doing well in stopping them and Ossett were playing the ball out wide and down the wings well and another move which involved most of the team ended with a shot just wide. A great run down the wing by Bailey G put the ball into the box and Bailey M tapped it into the net to get him his hat trick to make it 5 v 5.

Callum F and Isaac stopped Thornhill straight away from the kick off and the two Baileys combined well and played it to Callum M on the left who cut inside and scored a lovely goal for Ossett to take the lead. 6 v 5.

Ossett were well on top and were playing some good football and any threat Thornhill made was just a threat as the Ossett team but a quick breakaway from halfway by Thornhills best player who was brought back on for this reason ran through and scored to make it 6 v 6.

With just a few seconds remaining a defensive mix up cost Ossett the game and made the final score 6 v 7, With once again Thornhills best player finishing it off.

Final Score Ossett 6 v 7 Thornhill .

Man of the match Callum McGarry. Top defensive display and scored a goal too, well done.

Ossett were the better team by a mile and its a shame alot of the teams are,nt trained the same, to be able to pass and move with the ball, do a bit more with the ball etc, the result says 6 v 7, but the boys were happy with how they played, and its alot better on theeye to watch Ossett than other teams who just hoof the ball and let certain players do all the work for them.

Ossett Town C vs Shelf B

Location: Highfield Stadium

Kai Hatfield; Finn Tattersfield; Toby Harrison; Thomas Berry; Adem Onal; James Goodson

On a beautiful spring morning in Gawthorpe, the sun had his hat on – or was at least trying it on in the mirror to make sure it fits properly.  Ossett started with a zip, playing a narrow game to restrict the opposition.  At times, to the naked eye, it looked a little bunched in the middle of the park but the reds had outlets down the flanks which they utilised well.  Make no doubt about it, Shelf had quality and some technical players… after a close first 10 minutes, Shelf made the breakthrough after Adem Onal pulled off some good stops in the Ossett goal;  1-0 Shelf.  After a few hints from the manager, White, from the touchlines, Ossett didn’t take long to equalise.  Good work from Harrison, Goodson and Hatfield before the ball was fed into the feet of Berry – he finished with aplomb into the bottom corner;  1-1.

Harrison was playing in a sweeper role at the back and must be commended for his Beckenbauer-esque coolness in possession when the last man.  Never one to ‘stick it in the stand’ or take any notice of the enigmatic gentleman on the touchline, who’s chosen phrase to encourage young Toby to get rid of the ball, was by bellowing, “BUST IT!”  Harrison never ‘bust it’, he looked up and thought about where to feed the ball – on many an occasion, setting up an attacking opportunity.

The second half began with more urgency on both sides, with the weather suggesting that the sun had now decided to try his hat on and venture into the garden.   Whilst the spectators were slowly stripping off and rubbing sun cream on each other, the game really took hold.  A flurry of quality goals in a ten minute spell soon saw the score at 2-2 after another good finish from the rampant Berry.   Goodson and Tattersfield were dominating in midfield and soon, the talented Onal went through to score (after spending the first half in goal) with a confident finish.  Hatfield was playing some clever stuff and his wizardry had the Shelf defence bamboozled on many an occasion. Harrison was still bossing the park and sent Onal in for another;  3-2 Ossett.  Soon, Onal would be helping himself to a hat trick – good work in midfield from Tattersfield, he fed Goodson, who in turn, played a clever ball via Berry to send Onal free; 4-2 Ossett   ; Onal through again; 5-2 Ossett.     The now bikini-clad crowd were sipping cocktails on the touchline – this seemed to have a negative outcome on the boys as, before long, it was 5-5.   One round of ‘Popeye the sailor man’ from the icecream van and it was enough to turn the heads of the Ossett team as they found themselves 6-5 down; 6-5 Shelf.

Such was the effects of sunstroke, the icecreams and cocktails… I couldn’t be sworn to this being the actual scoreline… but a great display from the lads in red; they all played incredibly well.  It will be the first time I’ve awarded a man of the match but, on this occasion, with Onal  and Berry grabbing goals for fun,  Tattersfield and Hatfield dominating in midfield, Goodson so good on the ball… but Harrison was superb throughout, a dominating display and he gets my vote.

D Team Vs Shelf C

Team – Jack Jones, Joe Hurdus, Dominik Stefanksi, Max Dervisevic, Kian Dixon, Luca Teal.

On the first sunny Sunday morning of the year Shelf travelled to Highfield to meet Ossett.  Shelf kicked off but didn’t have control of the ball for long as Dominik tackled well and had two good attempts at a goal, narrowly missing.   Kian made a good save as Shelf came back and had a go themselves.    Some good defending by Joe and Max where Dominik again got control of the ball and on his third attempt scored the first goal of the morning.

Shelf came back and had another go but again Kian saved the day.  The ball was thrown back into play with Jack taking immediate control, hurtling all the way down the middle of the pitch and scoring the second goal of the match.    It wasn’t long before Dominik had scored the third goal for Ossett.

Shelf kicked off again and Ossett took control, Dominik had another go but Shelf saved this one and took the ball back down to Ossett’s end of the pitch.  Good defending by Luca gave Ossett the ball again which was passed to Dominik who had another shot at the goal, narrowly missing.    Shelf then had the ball but were tackled by Luca who made a good pass to Jack and gave him the opportunity to score the fourth goal of the game.

Half time – Ossett 4 – Shelf 0

The second half saw Max in the goal, saving the first attempting by Shelf within seconds of kick off.  Ossett immediately took control of the ball with good tackling and passing between all the players, the ball was passed to Joe who chipped the ball over the keeper scoring the first goal of the second half.

Good attempts were made at goal kicks from Luca and Kian but their keeper saved a few and another narrowly missed.  Luca had another attempt and this one made it into back of the net.    It wasn’t long before Luca scored his second goal of the day bringing the score to 7 – 0 to Ossett.

Ossett kept control of the ball throughout most of the second half of the game, making good passes and tackling well.   Kian, playing in his first match with Ossett under 7’s, was passed the ball and ran down the pitch kicking the ball right on target taking the score to 8 – 0.     More good passes were made by Ossett but Shelf’s goal keeper made some good saves.    In the last minute of the game Shelf took control of the ball and scored their first and only goal of the match.

Ossett 8 – Shelf 1

This was a well fought game with Ossett playing really well. The score line is not a fair reflection of how well these boys played. Thornhill had a strong defence and quality goalkeeper. The team got to know each other better by the second half and settled into the game really well.

MOM: each and every one of them. Well played today boys you deserved a better result. Well played to Steve and all the other coaches. Thanks for providing another great piece of entertaining football.
