The Panthers started brightly with the first chance falling to Lewis Cartledge who shot just wide. Norristhorpe hit straight back and had a good attack that led to Scott beaten in goal, but thankfully Mark tracked back superbly and cleared the ball off the line, an early let off. The Panthers next attack came from Seb Fealy whose long range shot went just over the bar. Norristhorpe attacked again with a good effort at goal, which Scott saved pushing the ball away for a corner, but unfortunately but injuring his back whilst doing so, causing a slight delay to the game whilst he received treatment. The resulting Norristhorpe corner was met by their player, but the Panthers cleared it off the line only for their player to react quicker than any of ours to slot the ball home, 1-0 to the away side.
The game settled then after the first few minutes been end to end. Lewis worked his magic in midfield and got brought down just on the edge of the box to get his side a free kick in a dangerous area. Up stepped Ben Fishman who struck the free kick perfectly, but the Norristhorpe keeper just managed to get his fingers to it to keep it out, but thankfully the ball fell into the path of Dan who fired home, 1-1 and game on. The Panthers kept up their pressure with some strong runs from Seb Fealy and Will Hall. A corner to the Panthers floated in by Ben saw Reece burst into the box and score a great diving header 2-1.
Norristhorpe kept attacking the Panthers and had a string of chances to equalise, Scott once again saving well but again fell awkward on his back and had to come off, up stepped Callum Burden in goal. Mark was ever present at the back, talking and directing his team mates, Edward and Chris played well together with some great touches. Next on the score sheet was Will with a stunning long range left foot shot, 3-1 and the Panthers were cruising. Dan added a fourth goal just before half time, making it 4-1.
Second half and would the Panthers get many more goals? The floodgates seemed to be open. An early scuffle in the Norristhorpe penalty area between Reece and a Norristhorpe player saw a bit of pushing and shoving, but then the Norristhorpe player head butted Reece which is a first for me at junior football and not very nice to see at any age or level of football, straight red for the Norristhorpe player and Reece got booked for the pushing. Thankfully Reece was not hurt, probably just shocked, as we all were. Seriously kids this is not what anyone wants to see, but credit to Reece for not retaliating and to all his team mates for supporting Reece, keeping their heads and acting really grown up in a very difficult but avoidable situation, well done boys, I am sure Ossett Town as a club will be proud of you all. I know as a parent and a football fan I am and sure your parents are. Credit to the Ossett Town coaches too who instantly saw what problems could come from the incident and they knew what had to be said to their players.
Right, back to the game, Josh Wilkinson came back on and made some great darting runs into the danger area. Seb was strong and rode three tackles to put a great ball into Reece who blasted home, a great response Reece Cowan – that is how you reply lad, well done. The Panthers were bossing the game now with the extra player, Will, Seb and Lewis were charging forward at every opportunity and Dan got his hat-trick with a fine shot to make it 6-1. Seb got on the score sheet next after a great ball in from Lewis, 7-1, Lewis was outstanding throughout today. Dan added the Panthers eigth and his fourth of the day. Josh had an effort well saved, but the nine and final goal was a own goal.
Final score 9-1 to the Panthers. Men of the Match were Reece Cowan – a great battling performance, well taken goals and a cool head, Dan Fletcher – awesome finishing today Dan and Callum Burden – well done for pulling the goalie’s jersey on, some good saves and ace kicking out. Special mention to Scott – hope the back isn’t too painful, remember what I said “settee, remote control, mum and dad waiting on you and a week off school! no Xbox or PS4 though”. Hope you are fit for next week.
Also a mention to Lewis Cartledge who, in my opinion, was a contender for man of the match for the Panthers.
