The Panthers had 4 players missing today so this was going to be a tough game against a good side and very strong winds.
Reece Cowan made his debut for the Panthers in goal, a few other players were also out of position due to players missing, so bit of an unsettled side really. The Panthers were up against it first half with Northowram having the advantage of the strong wind, which looked like an additional player in the early stages with the Panthers under a lot of pressure from the away attackers. Reece had a few early touches and looked confident and on his toes in goal.
Northowram took an early lead with a good shot which Reece saved well but was unfortunate that the ball spilled to one of their players to toe poke the ball home, 1-0 to the away side. The Panthers kept their heads and battling against the wind, Mark had a strong run from midfield into the box and was hacked down, penalty and a chance to get back into the game, Lewis stepped up to take it but hit the post.
Chris, Edward, Josh and Harrison had to dig in hard in defence with the ball swirling around everywhere but all stood up to the task well. Thomas and Lewis linked up well together, Will and Seb were both strong and Dan held the ball up well and had some great touches, but the wind was against us and Northowram scored another goal after some untidy defending from the Panthers, 2-0 and the lads were up against it.
Second half and Will pulled the goalie shirt on which allowed Reece to have a run out. Mark was playing all over the field today and a superb ball through for Reece saw him cooly knee the ball home, 2-1 and game on. This half and the wind would be important to us and to our advantage, guess what? The wind dropped…… not going to be our day!!! Seb had a shot just wide and Reece had anothrt effort which just saw his shot go agonisngly wide.
Will looked confident in goal too and his kicks outs were spot on allowing the front runners of Dan & Reece plenty of opportunities. James tackled well and tried to get the ball forward with some great passes, Lewis was busy in the middle of the park, but we just lacked some fire and passion today boys, not much talking or communicating going on. Will made a super stop from a Northowram free kick to keep his side in the game.
Northowram scored two quick goals to make the score 4-1, but the Panthers hit back with some great determination from Harrison and a great ball into Dan whose shot was saved but thankfully the ball fell to Reece who blasted the ball home 4-2 and that’s how the game ended.
Man of the Match went to Dan Fletcher who ran well all game, had some great touches, headers on and was up front on his own a lot of the time. Not a bad performance boys in difficult conditions, if we had scored the penalty and taken the chances we had when the score was 2-1, I think we could maybe have sneaked a win, but the wind was against you today both halves. We go again next week boys, heads up. Special mention to Reece and Will for stepping up and standing in for Scott in goal.
