We’re with the big boys now

Mindless optimism surged through the Ossett lads having ended last season strongly, came close in a cup final and promoted to the top league. A few growth spurts over the summer and deeper voices and facial hair, plus some rather worrying bouffant hairstyles gave rise to the level of optimism.

Our opponents were Division 1 champions last year, but we were narrowly beaten by them on penalties in a cup game so we were hoping to compete well.

On what will probably be the first and last game of the season where the spectators could stand and watch in the warm sunshine the season got underway.

Glen started the stronger and looked more dangerous and were soon ahead and quickly stretched this to a two goal lead. Connor did well to save some fierce shots but only managed to parry them back into the danger zone where the Glen forwards were faster to the ball for easy put ins. Ossett did threaten and Louis Conyers had a half chance that he couldn’t put away. Tyler’s extraordinary long throw-ins were a real threat and Ossett had a least 2 or 3 half chances. For us to succeed in this division, we will need to start converting more of the half chances.

Another good attacking move led to an Ossett corner and from this one of the Glen defenders put it in the back of his own net. At 2:1 down Ossett were still very much in the game and were filling with confidence. Then lady luck decided to join Glen’s team. A good shot was well saved by Connor as he tipped the dipping ball on to the bar only for it to bounce nicely in front of the oncoming forwards. It could have gone anywhere but didn’t! So we ended up going into halftime 3:1 down but still very much in with a shout.

Not only have the lads got to constantly improve, but Chris needs to work on his half time team talks as in the second half we stopped playing football and failed to keep the ball. We reverted to the long ball and like a rubber ball it kept bouncing straight back.

Glen failed to convert a clear cut penalty, but scored a further 3 goals in the second half. They were the stronger team overall and Ossett need to work on their stamina and keeping their heads up till the end. One person who had no such issues was Tyler and late in the game he received the ball just inside Glen’s half, beat 2 or 3 players and then he absolutely mullered the ball into the top right corner. The keeper got a touch but it was far too powerful to stop. This was a small highlight in an otherwise disappointing second half

So, a heavy defeat, but we did compete for much of the game and there were some positive signs. Here’s to a great season!!
