Man of the match ( shared ) – Ewan Broadbent / Matty Thompson / Will Kenworthy
The 2nd meeting between these sides in 3 weeks took place on a fresh Sunday morning on a field that passed a pitch inspection at 830am , the Tornados lined up with 3-5-2 formation Ferguson – Kenworthy / Rawden / Broadbent – Nash / Antonen / Graham / Lawley / Lindley – Spink – Stephens / Pert . Subs -Thompson / Higgins / Stephenson
From the kick off Queensbury looked to put the Tornado’s on the back foot , attacking down both flanks looking for an opening and the chance to test James Ferguson in goal . After the early exchanges both sides battled hard to get the upper hand , the midfield area was not one for the faint hearted and players from both sides deserve credit for how they approached the game , the ball broke down the left finding Brad Graham who cut back inside and put a teasing cross into the box . Controlling the ball and spinning to find space Bill Pert smashed the ball off the under side of the bar and the rebound landed a yard over the line ( 1-0 ) . Queensbury came back at Ossett testing the boys all over the pitch – a major trait of the Tornados in recent weeks has been their togetherness and willingness to work for each and they certainly produced it today when it was required . Queensbury are a very good side but found clear cut chances hard to come by not through their lack of quality but more due to the resilience and work rate of the Tornado’s . Space was denied / pressure applied & mistakes hunted down early and the half time break arrived with the Tornados leading 1-0 .
The 2nd half was very similar to the 1st both sides working hard & playing some excellent flowing football , chances fell to both sides Lewis Stephens had several good opportunities to increase the lead but couldn’t get his shots away / James Higgins also had a great chance but couldn’t beat the keeper . The midfield area was a tough place to be today and players from both sides played the game without it ever really getting out of hand . For several weeks the boys have played with 3 at the back and today the 3 produced a collective performance that was at times outstanding and worthy of the shared Man of the match award .
With the game edging closer to the full-time whistle Queensbury launched an attack which after a scramble in the 6yrd box the ball broke to the attacker how forced the ball home and took the game to extra time . (1-1)
Both sides regrouped and came out looking for the winner and it was Ossett Town who found it , Kieran Stephenson , who had a great game in the ‘hole’ found space on the edge of the box and bent a lovely shot on to the inside of the post and as it rolled across the line Hayden Lindley – Spink smashed the ball home from just over a yard out . From the kick off the Tornados attacked again and as Lewis Stephens entered the box the challenge came in and the penalty was given . Brad Graham stepped up an rolled the ball into the far corner to seal the game and the Tornados passage into the next round of the cup .
At times the game was played on the edge but the Tornados where outstanding and throughly deserved the victory . Well done to both sides and good luck to Queensbury for the rest of the season .
