Ossett Town Ladies vs. Brighouse Athletic

Brighouse were Ossett’s opposition this week in what was predicted to be a hard fought encounter. With Harrogate leading the way at the top of the West Riding County Women’s League Premier Division with 17 points, Hemsworth were second with Ossett third on 16 points and Brighouse coming in 4th with 15 points. This was Ossett’s penultimate game of the season and despite other teams having games in hand, Town found themselves right in the middle of a title race.

The conditions were once again poor but Ossett were determined to do a lot better this time round and avenge the 5-1 humiliation in the return fixture back in November. The home side set their stall out early and pushed Brighouse back from kick off. They were rewarded for their early pressure when Gemma Howell burst through the Brighouse defence to put Ossett 1-0 up; her shot taking a slight deflection on the way through.

The game was a very high tempo and the poor facilities at Springmill soon became a mudbath with players slipping and sliding around. Despite this, both sides continued to take the game to each other and after Ossett missed a chance to make it 2-0, it was Brighouse who struck back on the half hour to level the scores and it remained level at the break.

Ossett tightened up on their defence at half time as they attempted to deal with the aerial threat of Brighouse but also spoke about creating width whilst in possession of the ball. They started the second half as they finished the first and looked the firm favourites to grab the next goal. They could not take their chances however and Brighouse always remained a threat on the counter attack. Striker Caroline Omboyi went close with a header from a corner but she couldn’t direct it goalwards. Instead the winner came in the 87th minute from an unlikely source; midfielder Jess Fenal who was playing in an unfamiliar defensive role, found herself on the ball with time and space on the edge of the penalty area. Brighouse had her goalbound shot covered but it took a wicked deflection and trickled into the opposite corner, leaving the goalkeeper helpless and the home side ecstatic.

Full time; Ossett 2 – 1 Brighouse Athletic. The Elite Cars Player of the Match was Gemma Howell.

Ossett’s final game of the season will be against Bradford Park Avenue on Sunday 22nd March, 2pm at The 4G Voice and Data Stadium.
