U11 Warriors Match Report from Saturday 24 October 2015
The Warriors took to the field determined to build on their improved performance at YMCA last week and secure revenge over Upperthong A who had beaten them a few weeks earlier. The boys lined-up with James in goal; Jamie, Jacob and Lucas in defence; a midfield quartet of Leon, Cai, Tom and Emmanuel; with Charlie up front and Alfie as sub.
From the first exchanges it was clear the Warriors were showing the hunger and desire that the coaches had been encouraging them to find to add to their neat passing football. Leon, Emmanuel, Cai and Charlie combined early on to create several half chances, just the final finish was missing. That soon followed as Charlie opened the scoring calmly slotting the ball home after a racing clear of the visitors back line.
There was some fantastic passing and movement on show, but most pleasing was the reaction to losing the ball – complete determination to win it back quickly! Jamie, Lucas and Jacob looked untroubled at the back – quick to get a strong foot in and set-up play with simple passes into the midfield. Tom and Alfie both provided the protective cover in front which allowed the attacking players to express themselves.
A deserved second goal followed – Chazza again providing the finish, the boys breaking from defending a corner to scoring, with a fine free flowing move from one end to another.
As the half progressed, Upperthong started to play more football of their own and James had to be alert turning the ball round the post from a good long range shot, also showing solid handling in difficult wet conditions.
Half-time: Ossett Town Warriors 2 v 0 Upperthong A
The second half started with Upperthong on the front foot looking to get back into the game. After some initial stout defending the boys stood off and allowed their striker too much time and he finished well into the top corner to half the deficit.
The Warriors two goal advantage was restored again with a fine move. Jacob received the ball off James and hit a lovely pass into Charlie’s feet. Young Reece Cowan, making his refereeing debut, had a fine game and he played the advantage as Jacob was fouled with a sliding tackle. Charlie then beat the defender before squaring a pass for Cai who finished neatly. The same two players combined again, this time Cai tried a first time finish instead of taking a touch when he had loads of time and acres of space!
As the clock ticked down Upperthong continued to battle and intercepted a slightly under hit goal kick from James to make it 3-2 with two minutes left!
In the end Charlie avoided a nervous finish by receiving the ball from the kick off, beating 3 defenders with great skill, before rounding the keeper and completing his hat-trick! Brilliant!
Full-time: Ossett Town Warriors 4 v 2 Upperthong A
A fantastic team performance that should have yielded more goals from som terrific football, but was particularly pleasing for the hard work and effort when not in possession. Have I mentioned that! The challenge now is to keep that level of performance up in the coming weeks.
Player of the match: as ever hard to choose after such a fine team display but two boys pipped it! First hat-trick hero Charlie after a superb display, full of skill and trickery; second Tom for a whole hearted effort for his team, closing down the opposition, winning tackles and distributing the ball well. Special mention for a fine defensive effort from Jamie who tweaked a muscle stretching to make a super last ditch tackle.
